A Brief Stop at Belle Isle

So then I decided to head over to Belle Isle.  It was a nice enough night to do so.
Evidently, they have been turning on the Scott Fountain.  I will have to admit, it looks pretty cool with water running through it.
Then I looked over towards the skyline and liked the way it looked against the setting sun.
But I really liked the look of the Super Moon.  No sooner was I hoping to get a picture of a boat in front of it when the Detroit Princess appeared.
A little more of the skyline in the picture.
And a little less.
Then I saw the MacArthur Bridge and decided to get a picture of that.
I wouldn't have taken this picture, but I saw the plane flying over, so I had to have it.
A Detroit Police boat racing somewhere.

The Full Moon's Still Out There

There was a full moon tonight.  It looked like the weather wasn't going to cooperate earlier but I decided to check and the sky was clear.  Besides, it's been a while since I've done a moon shot.
The Full Moon in June is called the Strawberry Moon.  Apparently this name was used by the Algonquin Tribe.  In Europe it was called the Rose Moon.  Since June is typically the month that strawberries are harvested, the name stuck.
I adjusted the settings a little bit.  I like this picture a little better.

Apparently it is also called the Honey Moon.  Back in the day, marriages would coincide with harvest and planting cycles.  June is not typically a month for either, so that's when people would get married.  In Ireland, the groom would be gifted with honey mead...so hence the name.   It has also been called that because of its typically low position in the sky and it gets a golden color at moon rise.
And then a little cropping.

This Full Moon also coincides with Friday the 13th.  The last time that happened was in October of 2000.  The next time it will happen will be in August of 2049.    So if you're superstitious, it might be a good idea to avoid anything today since both are portents of something.

That's No Moon

As I was heading out of work tonight, I looked up in the sky and I saw the moon and I decided I needed a picture of it.

There is something I like about taking pictures of the moon in the daylight.  It certainly is alot easier than taking pictures of it in the night.  Although I don't necessarily think it looks better.  But anyway...here is the moon.

The Morning Moon

As I was heading into the work today, I looked up in the sky and I caught a glimpse of the moon.   I thought it looked kind of cool.
So as I got into the parking lot, I had to take a picture.  One of these days I'll get a plane in front of it.

Hello, Mr. Moon

And I leave you with a picture of the moon.
I thought the sky would be a little brighter but if I left that exposure, the moon would look like a gaseous ball and I can't have that.

Let's Take a Shot at the Moon

As I was heading home, I thought the moon looked particularly cool.
I wish I would have timed this picture a little better.  It would have been cool to have a picture with the plane in front of the moon but I don't think that would have been the case.
Just a shot of the moon.
Using manual settings.  I think I like this one the best of the three.

There's a Moon Over Ypsilanti

As I was heading home from the game tonight, I looked up in the sky and liked the look of the moon.
I really liked the slight ring of fog around the moon.

Cold Hearted Orb That Rules the Night

I was going to take pictures of the Wayne County Lightfest but things did not work out quite the way I expected, so I just got pictures of the moon.
For the first picture, I just used what I thought were good settings for shooting the moon.  It's kind of a tricky business shooting the moon though as you need to use rule of thumb settings on there, since the meter doesn't really like the moon.
Then I went a little darker.  I think I like this one a little better.
There were some clouds under the moon and I was going to try to get those.
But it didn't work out too well, leaving the moon overexposed.

I think I'm going to try again tomorrow night for the Lightfest.

The Full Moon Is Still Out There...

....Like a great white balloon.  The hours are a calling.  And they are singing my tune.  The night keeps a calling.  I wish the day would come soon.  Get away from a full moon.
I noticed that there was a full moon tonight, so I decided to take a picture.

Title  and first part of the post is courtesy of the Kinks.

That's No Moon

Well actually it is a moon and not a space station.
But it still looks pretty cool.

Once in a Blue Moon

I'm not sure if tonight actually counted as a blue moon or if that would have been last night but the moon did look pretty cool.
Like I did with the pictures from Sunday night, I tried different exposures on my camera.  This was hte one that would have let in the least amount of light and I think it was the best of the three.  The moon is crisp enough.
This one is a slight adjustment and is okay.
For this one I changed both the shutter speed and f-stop.  I think it is okay but a little fuzzy.

Moon Shots...

These are shots over two nights.
Last night as I was heading home from my mom's, I looked up and I liked the look of the moon.  So I took a picture of it.

And I really liked the look of the moon tonight.  The three different pictures are at different exposures.  This was the slowest shutter speed.
I bumped it up a notch.
And one more notch.  I think I like this one the best.

There's a Moon Over Ann Arbor

So I ended the day in Ann Arbor because I met my Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, his wife and her parents at Metzger's for dinner.  His wife and her parents are from Germany and I thought Metzger's would be good for them.  Apparently, they spent the day at Henry Ford.
As I was heading back to the car, I looked up at the moon.  I kind of liked how it looked.  Sadly, to get the sky to look right, the moon would like a gaseous ball.
This is what it would have looked like...meh.  One think I've learned is that you need daylight settings for the moon.  Anything less will yield pictures like this or worse.
So back to the other settings.
One more attempt to get somewhere in between and I like it, especially since I got the haze ring around the moon.

Bad Moon Rising

I was actually hoping to get an earlier shot of this but the sky was already too dark on me.  If I had taken the picture with the recommended camera settings, I would have had a picture of a gaseous ball.
Instead I get the moon over Ypsilanti.
To steal from another song, sort of...Would that be a moon over Huron Street?

The Moon

As I was leaving from gaming tonight, I looked up at the sky and I thought the moon looked pretty cool as it was surrounded by stars.
If you look to the right of the picture, you can see one of those stars very faintly.  You might have to click on the picture to see the full sized imagine though.

The Crescent Moon

As I got home and got out of the car, I looked up at the moon and had to take a picture of it.
Although the orientation isn't quite right as it was more tangent to the bottom of the picture.  I liked this angle better though.

Cold Hearted Orb That Rules the Night

The moon was full or pretty close to full tonight, so I had to take a picture of it.
So enjoy.

In the Skies Over Ann Arbor

I heard planes buzzing the office all day, so I was hoping that I would still see one or two as I stepped out to head home for the day.  Sadly, the sun was already setting so the light was waning quickly.  But there were planes up and the sky still looked pretty cool.
The sad part about waning light is that it is tough to not get a blurry shot with my bigger lens.  I really need to look into getting an image stabilization version.  Granted, this doesn't look too bad.
About a year ago, I remember seeing a picture of the United States from orbit and with all the contrails, it looked like it was encased in a spider web.  Based on the number of planes I saw in the 15 minutes I was outside, that wouldn't surprise me.
The moon looked kind of different tonight...but not by much.
So which picture do you prefer?  The one above or the one below.
Looking at Flight Aware right now, there are almost 7,000 flights in the sky over the United States.  If you figure a plane holds at least 100 people, that means that the population of Detroit is flying over the country right now.
A flight of a different sort.
The geese and the moon.  That sounds like it could be the title of a children's book.

Well enjoy.

New Moon on Thursday

As I was stepping out of the office tonight, I was greeted by a scene that I just had to photograph.  I was hoping the scene would turn out as well as it was in my eyes.
After some fiddling around with the manual settings, I think I came pretty close.  I just liked how the sun was going down and the moon was almost between the trees.  I kind of wish there weren't the wires and the piece of pole.  Oh well.  I still think it looks pretty nice.
So then I looked around the lot a bit.  I kind of like this one but there is a little bit of motion blur.
I would have liked this one more if there weren't the lines.
Same with this one, but the moon was about the effect I was going for.
Can you guess what this is? :)
One more shot of the moon with my telephoto lens.  The unfortunate part of shooting a moon like this is the overexposure on the sliver part.  Oh well.

Hope you enjoyed the moon....
