The Manitowoc

The Manitowoc started life as the Paul Thayer which was constructed at the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain, Ohio. It represented a step back in ship lengths. Most ships at the time were built to the maximum allowable sizes for the Soo or St. Lawrence locks. This was built shorter so it could ply the Cuyahoga River.

This is a picture of the ship unloading gravel at the Wirt Stone Dock in Bay City, Michigan. The ship can carry 19,650 tons of cargo. She is mostly used to carry coal and stone.

The ship has an overall length of 630 feet.

In 2008, she was renamed the Manitowoc by her present owners.
