Docked behind the LST is the Paul H. Townsend which is a lake freighter. She is currently being used for cement storage and little else. But she is kind of a beautiful ship.
She was originally constructed as a cargo vessel at the end of World War II. She was to be used on coastal runs where speed wasn't of the essence. Her life started as the Hickory Coll but she entred service as the Coastal Delegate.
I looked out one of the openings of the LST and I saw this shot and I really liked it. Anyways...
In 1951, she was bought by the Huron Transportation Company to be used as a self unloading cement carrier. When the convsersion was completed, she was christened as the Paul H. Townsend.
In 1959, she was sold to National Gypsum.
She is currently operated by Inland Lakes Management and received a fresh coat of paint in 2006.
As I said, she is currently laid up and will likely stay that way.
She just passed our home between Cheboygan and Rogers City headed east. She is being towed by a large tug! Beautiful view!
