Hillsdale County Courthouse

If you continue west from Lenawee County, you will find yourself in Hillsdale County.

Hillsdale County was split off from Lenawee County in 1829.  Originally, the county seat was located in Jonesville but was later moved to more centrally located Hillsdale in 1839.  In 1887, it was recognized that a new courthouse was needed but funds were not approved until 1898.  The courthouse was built for $45,000.  Construction was completed in 1899 and the clock was added in 1909.

Hillsdale itself is home to Hillsdale College which is very active in conservative politics.  It was also the birthplace of Jason Robards, Sr. who was the father of the more successful actor, Jason Robards, Jr.
