The Kaministiqua Passes By

It wasn't too long for the ship I was waiting for to appear.  It was a good thing too.  While the temperature said it was in the mid 40's, the wind made it feel much colder.

The Kaministiqua was coming down from Thunder Bay.
I know that because I caught her last Sunday as she was heading up to Thunder Bay.
I think the ships had to take the long way around Lake Superior because of the nasty weather they had last week.   Factor in that it is already a roughly 2 day trip from Detroit to Thunder Bay.
Add in at least 2 days for loading.
So it makes sense that she would be passing Detroit today.  She is heading to Sorel which is in Quebec.
She is approached by the M.S. Westcott.
She passes Windsor.  The M.S. Westcott is behind her.
A relatively clean background between downtown Windsor and the Ambassador Bridge.
She approached the bridge with the M.S. Westcott at her side.
The tower of the Ambassador Bridge at her bow.
Amidships.
And near her pilothouse.
She continues down the River.
The Westcott leaves her.
It is at least two days to Sorel from this point.

And a Bonus Ship

It's always nice to get a ship that I wasn't expecting to get.

The Kaministiqua was docked.  I think she was getting fuel but unfortunately, she was too far away and that was one of the pictures that had evidence of heat haze.
As was I watching the other ships, I noticed that she started to move.  I was kind of surprised because I think she just go there.
I'm not entirely sure how long it takes to refuel a ship, so I was kind of surprised to see her moving.
Her AIS lists her destination as Thunder Bay.  That means she is likely picking up grain.
She starts to pass the Finnborg.
I like this shot.  It is not one that I can get often.
She continues on her way.  It might not be a rough ride for her tonight but I think the nasty weather returns.

A Pair of Ships Refuelling

There are two fuel docks near Detroit.  Ships will typically stop at them on their upbound journey.

This is the Sterling in Windsor.  It is typically used by Canadian (or Canadian flagged) ships.  The Kaminisiqua was pulling into the docks as I was down there.
This is the Maumee.  She is the barge portion of a tug/barge.  She was docked at the Mistersky Fuel Docks.  I think she pulled in after the American Century left.

The Kaministiqua Makes an Appearance

My mom is still in rehab and I went to visit her but I got there kind of early because I saw that there was a handful of ships passing Detroit later in the afternoon.

The first up was the Kaministiqua.  It has only been a couple of months since I've see her but she is one I like to catch.
She was coming down from Thunder Bay and given her configuration and where she was going, I can only assume she was carrying grain.
She was heading to Sorel which is near Quebec City.  It is a grain port.
I think it is used for trans shipping.  Ships like the Kaministiqua will take grain from Thunder Bay there and other ships will take it to Europe.
I think it is one of the longer trips on the Great Lakes, lasting almost a week.
Anyway, I think this is a fairly nice looking ship.
Although, I liked her better before they repainted her.  The rust went down the side but it looked like it belonged.
Anyway, she is what is called straight decker as she doesn't have the self unloading crane.
You can see the next ship peeking out behind her.
One of the fairly clear shots from Riverside.
The next ship appears on the other side.
She passes Windsor.
I like this shot.
She passes the Ambassador Bridge and is passed by the M.S. Westcott.
The Ambassador Bridge roughly in the center.
The almost beam shot.
She continues on her way.
She approaches the Gordie Howe Bridge.
The flags on the span.  I think they roughly mark where the border is.
The Gordie Howe Bridge looks nice with the span nearly complete.

And Then There Was the Kaministiqua

The fact that there were two ships I was planning to catch helped my going down to catch them.

The Kaministiqua was also coming downbound.
I think she was also coming down from Thunder Bay.
That likely means she was carrying grain.
The fact that she was heading to Sorel confirms that she was carrying grain.
A shot of downtown Detroit in the background.
It is cool they are building the bridge but that is going to mess up the view of the skyline.
One more shot with my regular camera.
And then I switched to my drone.  It was a little on the windy side.
But not too windy.
The sky looked pretty cool though.
The beam shot.
And she passes by.  I think it is about two days to her destination.  Sorel is just on the outside of Montreal.  It is used as a trans shipping point for grain going overseas.
