Catching the American Mariner

 The next ship also appeared fairly quickly.

I was going to stay in Port Huron to catch the American Mariner, but I wasn't sure if I could do that and catch the other ships.  

So I decided to head down to Marysville to catch the other ships.  It was probably a good thing because my light was staring to wane in the cloudy skies.

I'm not sure where the American Mariner was coming from.  If I had to guess, I would say one of the stone ports.

She passes the Mark W. Barker.

She was heading down to Toledo.

So I switched to my drone.

Catching the American Mariner

I was kind of waffling again today.  The weather didn't look like it wanted to cooperate.  It was still raining a little bit here, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to go down to Detroit.  I looked at the weather for Detroit, other than being cold, it should be fine.

The American Mariner was coming downbound.  I think she was actually heading down from Silver Bay but I am not sure.

Silver Bay is about two hours to the northeast of Duluth.  It has an ore dock and rail line feeding into it.

I was thinking about going there when I was up in Duluth for a week but I didn't have time and I don't think anything was going there anyway.  Although I hear the drive is nice because it is along the famous Highway 61.

So consequently she has a load of iron.

And she is taking that iron to Conneaut.

Conneaut is a little over 12 hours away from Detroit by ship.  This was after a roughly two day trip from Silver Bay.

As you can see, it was a little foggy out but not too bad.

I kind of like the mood it sets.

I like watching these giants of the Lakes, even though the Mariner is one of the smaller ships.

Some Mariners Pass by on the American Mariner

 These ships were grouped pretty close together, so it didn't take long for the next ship to pass.

The next ship up was the American Mariner.

I think she was heading up from Detroit.  I think she was unloading stone there.

She was heading up to Sault Ste. Marie.

But I'm not sure what she was carrying there.

The sun was almost in line with her.

As I was following this ship, I could see the next one was pretty close.

As evidenced by this picture.

She looked pretty cool in the setting sun.

I love the oranges in this one.

The American Mariner Passes Port Huron

Like I said in my last post, after dilly dallying for most of the day, I decided  to head up to Port Huron to catch a ship.  Sometimes life throws me a bonus.

I was not expecting to see this ship, I thought she was still further away.  In fact, I didn't expect to see her before the ship I went up to see.  I'm fine with that.  I ended up going to my spot where I get decent shots of downbound ships.

The American Mariner was coming down from Port Dolomite.

Port Dolomite is just east of Cedarville and about 15 miles west of De Tour Village.

There is a quarry there and I think they mine dolomite stones there.

Dolomite has several uses.  I think it mostly used for an aggregate but it has other uses.

Port Dolomite is roughly 19 hours from Port Huron.

This particular ship was heading down to Marine City where they have a stone dock.

It was pretty cool to see.
