She was built in two sections at the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain, Ohio for the US Steel Fleet in 1968. She is a self unloader that can unload 10,000 tons per hour. She is the largest freighter that was constructed from the keel up on the Great Lakes.

She has an overall length of 858 feet and can carry 43,900 tons of cargo.

Her self unloader is mainly designed for taconite (unpure iron) but she can carry other loads.

She is equipped with bow thrusters.

She currently sails with the Great Lakes Fleet which is a derivative of her orignal owners. This is pretty rare for a lake boat it seems. She is named after one of the former chairmen of the board for US Steel.
