Originally built in 1890 to 1891, it served as the headquarters for the Student Christian Association of the University of Michigan. It was named in honor of John Newberry after a gift of $18,000 by his wife. It is a Romanesque building.
In 1921, it was no longer useful as a building for a campus religious group and was donated to the University for classroom use. In 1928, it was then converted to a Museum. In 1953, it was renamed the Kelsey Museum of Archeology and was renovated in 1994.
