Fort Custer National Cemetary

Fort Custer is a little bit west of Battle Creek.

 It was established in 1917 as part of the military mobilization during World War I.  The cemetery was not created until 1943.  In 1981, it became Fort Custer National Cemetery (the base part is still there and it is the largest National Guard training camp in the Midwest).

 During World War II, some Germans were kept as POWs there and there are some that are buried here.

 in 1997, 60 acres were added.  This is the only part that has stones like this.  The rest are grasser type stones.

 This serves as VA cemetery, so any veteran can be buried here.  I'm not sure where they all come from though.

 This is a monument to all the armed forces.  There are 50 flags here.

 the Avenue of Flags has 152 flags.
