The Helldiver was developed as a replacement to the Dauntless. It was much faster and could carry more armament but the design had a number of problems.

The plane had its first flight in 1940, but problems plagued it so much that it didn't see service until 1942.

The plane would help in sinking the Yamato and participated in many of the major battles of the war. It was finally retired from Italian service in 1959.
