Amazingly, this statue has appeared on this blog in the past. I'm not sure if I have a picture of the one in Washington DC or not but I do have a picture of the one near the Golden Gate Bridge.
The first statue was built in 1987 for the United States Navy Memorial in Washington DC. The sculptor was Stanley Bleifeld.
The face was inspired by Rear Admiral William Thompson, who was the first president and CEO of the Navy Memorial Foundation. The body is modeled from another sailor.
There are copies of this statue all over the place.
Here he stands watch over the USS Wisconsin.
And one more shot of him.
