The Charles M. Beeghly

Decided to go down shipwatching again today as it was a pretty nice day for it. It wasn't too hot and there was a nice breeze coming off the river.

I started out in the State Harbor again as that seems like one of the better spots for boatwatching. My first ship was the Charles M. Beeghly.

She started out life as the Shenango II, named after the company that originally bought her after construction. She was built by the American Shipbuilding Company in Toledo, Ohio and was finished in 1959.

She was sold to the Interlakes Shipping Company in 1967, where she became the Charles M. Beeghly. In 1971, she was lengthened by 96' to 806 feet. With the additional length she could carry 32,500 tons of cargo.

In 1981, she became a self unloader. She was temporarily renamed The Oberstar after a Congressman, but he requested his name be removed.
