The Manistee Lighthouse

The first Manistee lighthouse was built on the south pier in 1870. It was destroyed by a fire in 1871 (coincidentally on the same day as the great Chicago fire). Then two lighthouses were built in 1875 with one on each pier. The lights were moved repeatedly.

The current lighthouse was built in 1927 out of metal. The tower itself is 39 feet tall and the catwalk is only one of a few in Michigan that still survives. It still has it's light and was put for sale in 2009 under the Lighthouse Preservation Act.

This is a shot of the lighthouse and the beach near it. One of the things I like about the western side of the state is that the beaches are much nicer and sandier.
