The Sleeping Bear Dunes

These are pictures of the Sleeping Bear Dunes themselves.

The dunes are are on the northwestern part of the Lower Pennisula almost due west of Traverse City. Their name comes from a Chippewa Legend of a sleeping bear because they sort of look like a sleeping bear from the land side.

According to the legend there was an enormous fire on the west side of Lake Michigan and a mother and her cubs tried to swim across. The mother made it across but was tired so she waited on the eastern side for her cubs who never made it (They became the Manitou Islands). The mother fell asleep and was buried under the sand.

It is a pretty neat place to visit.

This is a shot of some of the dunes.

This is looking down from an observation platform. I liked the look of the tracks as they crossed the dunes.

Another shot looking across the dunes.

Looking at another part of the dunes.

It wasn't quite sunset yet but I wanted a different looking picture of the dunes.
