Boats in Michigan City

There is a marina in Michigan City and as a result there are some boats there.

This is a sailboat heading back towards the marina. I really like the look of sailboats under sail.

Cooling Tower

This is a picture of the cooling tower of the Michigan City Generating Station. I like the look of cooling towers because they sort of remind me of nuclear power.

Indiana Dunes

I could also see the Indiana Dunes. I might have to go back to see them closer.





They're not quite as impressive as the Sleeping Bear Dunes but they are pretty cool nonetheless.

A View of Chicago

Another thing I was surprised to see was the fact that I could see Chicago from Michigan city. Granted not much of it is visible but enough to tell it's there.

You can definately make out the silouette of the Sears Tower.

Michigan City East Light

Standing at the end of a pier and at the entrance of the harbor is the Michigan City East Light. This was built in 1904 and replaced the Old Michigan City Light. The catwalk still has its walking surface which is rare.

In 2007 was deemed excess by the Coast Guard and the city is applying to be one of the groups to get it.

Looking out towards the lighthouse. I was surprised to see that it had a pretty close resemblence to the St. Joseph lighthouse. But I guess they have some degree of standardization.

Civil War Monument in Michigan City

At the entrance of Washington Park in Michigan City stands this statue. It was sculpted by William O'Donovan and Jonathan Hartley. It was donated to the city from New York in 1893 by John H. Winterbotham who was a local businessman. It is to the sailors and soldiers who died in the Civil War.

The statue stands approximately 42 feet tall and fairly prominently displayed.

This figure is cast of bronze and stands 12 feet tall. She stands for victorious peace.

Old Michigan City Lighthouse

I took yesterday off and decided to head over to the western end of the state in my quest for lighthouses. I saw that there were two lighthouses in Michigan City, Indiana so I decided to head there first.

The first lighthouse I stopped at was the Old Michigan City Lighthouse. It was built in 1858 and was a little inland. This lighthouse was replaced by the Michigan City East light in 1904 as that one is at the edge of pier.

Here is a quarter view of the lighthouse. It is a pretty nice looking lighthouse.

A shot from the front. I can understand why it would have been replaced as it is more inland than the other light.

Looking up at the tower. There isn't a light inside.

Looking from the side. It sits on a hill which is part of the reason my picture looks so bizarre.
