Train Trip - Day 6

So today I went to the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, the Staten Island Ferry and various points in between. I would have posted a picture from one of those places but I rain across this.

For some reason, it reminded me of the Endover Cube back home. It did not look like you could spin this one however.

Train Trip - Day 5

So I took a trip on the Staten Island Ferry today and managed to catch a good number of ships that were leaving from Fleet Week. However the picture from today is not one of them.

Many thanks to Tugster for this shot.

Train Trip - Day 4

Did not get much of a chance to take pictures today, so my picture is on taken on the train from Washington D.C. to New York.

This is a shot of lower Manhattan from the train.

Train Trip - Day 3 Part 2

I made it back out to take more pictures. This time brought me to the Capitol Building. It is a shame that its occupants can't live up to the building.

As always more pictures when I get home. It is too much of a pain to post on the road.

Train Trip - Day 3

I decided to go to Arlington Cemetery today. I had never been there before. Unfortunately I picked a bad day for two reasons. The President spoke at the Tomb of the Unknowns, so I could not see that. It was pretty hot today, so I did not feel like walking around too much.

At any rate, the picture for the day is from Arlington. Pictures do not do it justice though.

Train Trip Day 2

So I continued on the Capitol Limited and got to my hotel. After a shower, I took a long nap so I did not get into Washington DC like I hoped. I will make up for it tomorrow though.

So this is a shot of a railroad bridge right after Harpers Ferry. I think it is part of a bike trail that takes you from Pittsburgh to Washington DC.

Well I do have a shot of Washington DC from my hotel.

On the Rails

So once again I am riding the rails. This morning I took the Wolverine from Ann Arbor to Chicago. Then I wandered around Chicago for a bit. Currently, I am on the Capitol Limited heading to Washington D.C. I will spend a couple of days in Washington. Then it is the Northeast Regional to New York City. After a couple days there it is the Lake Shore Limited back to Chicago and then the Wolverine back home.

This is the Tribune Building. As always, more pictures when I get home.

More Odds and Ends...

And so I leave you with another post of odds and ends from Milliken State Park.
I thought I would stop by the park this morning because it looked like there would be a ship coming upbound.  That ship ended up stopping for fuel so I never got to see it up close.  I think you can see it tucked behind the ship with the red hull though.  The red hulled ship is the Federal Elbe.  The one I was looking for was the Buffalo.
Sometimes I wish I were more of a morning person because I have to imagine the light would be much better on the Ren Cen.
Pulled to the side a bit.
When I stopped at the park this afternoon, a helicopter flew by.  Couldn't quite make out who it belonged to though.
This is Peter Stroh.  He is the great grandson of Bernhard Stroh, the man who emigrated from Germany to start Stroh Brewery in Detroit.  Through the years, the Stroh Brewery fell on hard times and was finally sold to Pabst in 1999.
Peter Stroh was instrumental in developing the Riverfront though which is why his statue is here.
I never noticed this statue before but I'd have to say this sculpture puts him in a good light.

I'd have to say he looks like he might have been a nice person.
A shot of the Ren Cen in the afternoon.  Unfortunately, I was almost shooting right into the sun.
I have no idea what this statue is but I did kind of enjoy it.
 A closeup of his head.
It wouldn't be a visit to the river without one seagull.
Although geese are unusual in this neck of the woods.

Some Flowers at Milliken State Park

There were a few flowers in bloom at the park although I don't think they are wildflowers.
 One of the dasies.
I'm not sure what kind of flower this is.
 A grouping of daisies.
I'm not sure what kind of flower this is but I like it.
This was on the same bush.
As was this one.  I suspect that by the time I get back from my trip, these will be gone.

A Surprise Visitor

Ever since Riverside Park has been closed, it has been a while since I've seen the Westcott.  It's kind of sad too because I like to watch the Westcott go about her work.
I was pretty happy as I heard the rumbling of engines passing by and when I looked up I saw a familiar sight.
It appears that the Westcott was delivering a pilot or someone to the Huron Service Tug.
As she pulls away from the park.
Her passenger delivered, she heads back to her dock.
This time she passed by a little closer to the park.
As you can see, she had a little chop to deal with.
It almost seemed like it was going to swamp her.

And she heads back to her home.  I seriously hope that Riverside Park is opened again because I'm missing getting shots of the Westcott in Action.

The Algolake Again...

The Algolake is a ship I've been wanting to catch for a while.  I've only seen her once and that was as she was pulling away from Belle Isle.  And this is even though I'm not a huge fan of the rear mounted pilot house.
Here are the shots though.  There was a group of people on jetskis that were racing and a couple of them looked like they were going to fly off the waves.
 As she gets closer.
 A shot of her bow.
 An almost straight on shot.

I think I really like the shots where the ship is straight out.
A sort of closeup of her pilothouse.

 As she is pulling away.

And one last shot before she heads off into the distance.
