Tug New York and Barge Double Skin 509A

 As I was flying my drone and looking for the first ship of the day, I saw that this one was loading on the river.

I decided to get some pictures.  It is the tugboat New York and it was pushing the barge Double Skin 509A.  I believe they were loading some kind of gas as they were at the Marathon terminal.

The New York was built by St. Johns Shipbuilding of Palatka, Florida for the Vane Brothers Company of Baltimore.

The tug is powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines with a total rating of 4,200 horsepower.

The barge is also owned by the Vane Brothers.  It can carry 55,000 barrels of oil.  It is designed for carrying heavy oils.

 There is usually a ship docked at the dock near Riverside.  Tonight was no different.

The vessel in front is the tug New York with her barge.  I'm not sure what they are carrying.  The ship in back is the Federal Beaufort.  I think she is loading steel coils but I'm not sure where she is heading.

The Tug New York Pushes a Barge

 On Friday night, I saw that a ship I wanted to catch was still docked in Detroit.  I was kind of waffling about catching her and then I saw that another ship would be passing.  So I decided to head down to Del Ray to catch them.

As I arrived at Del Ray, I saw that there was a barge being pushed down the river.  I was going to use my drone for the docked ship, so I decided to get my drone up to catch the tug and barge.

This was the tug New York and I don't think the barge had a name.  I know it was a double hulled barge, so I think it was carrying ashphalt.  It was being flanked by the Great Lakes Towing tug Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin is a fairly new tug and I'm not sure which of the Great Lakes tugs in Detroit she replaced.  I want to say that was Superior.

She looks like one of the ocean tugs.

I'm not sure who owns the New York but I've seen her a few times on AIS.

This may be the first time I caught her on this blog.

Riding the Lake Shore Limited

Next up was my almost return leg, the Lake Shore Limited.  This particular route is based on the one that used to be run by the New York Central Railroad.  The route was made famous in the movie "North By Northwest" as that is the route that Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint took from New York to Chicago.  The route is so named because it follows along the shore of Lake Erie for a good chunk of it.

 I'm not sure what bridge this is but I liked it.

 The train follows along the Hudson River for pretty much the beginning of the route.

 I kind of wish I would have sat on the correct side of the train as it was difficult getting pictures shooting around people.  However, I did manage to get some shots of the Hudson River.

 One of the bridges on the Hudson.  It almost reminds me of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.

 Believe it or not, the train actually passes through Sing Sing Prison.  I wonder if anyone has ever escaped by hopping on the train?

 It was a little overcast as we headed out of New York City.  That pretty much meant my picture taking opportunities were limited.

 I did kind of like the mountains we went through.

 We had a fairly lengthly stop in Albany as we would link up with the train from Boston.

 Looking down the length of the train.  We rode on a similar train to the Wolverine but the spacing between the seats was more like one of the Superliners.  Apparently they can't use the Superliners because of some of the tunnels in New York.

 I think this was still in Albany.

 With the combination of it getting dark and the weather, I didn't have many opportunities to take pictures until we got to Toledo.  This meant that I pretty much missed any pictures of the lake from the train.

 I believe this was somewhere in Indiana.

 Sometimes I get this shot but it depends on what I'm trying to get.  Normally I'm trying to get the Sears Tower.
