A Surprise Visitor

As I was watching the Federal Barents move past me, I saw that I was about to get a special treat.

The Appledore IV was starting to head up.  I think she is doing cruises on the Detroit River.
Normally she hangs out in Bay City.  It was pretty cool to see her under sail.
A passing you don't see every day.  That is unless you play Civilization and you haven't been keeping up with your tech.
I like this view.
I was hoping that I could get some shots with my drone but I couldn't catch up to her.

The Pride of Baltimore in Cleveland

As I got to Whiskey Island, I saw that I had a surprise as well.
It seems that the Pride of Baltimore II was docked in Cleveland.  I was happy to see this as she is beautiful ship.
She was taking part in the Tall Ships Challenge on the Great Lakes.  I'm not sure where she came from or where she was headed, but it was nice to see her here.
A shot with the lighthouse in the background.
I really like this shot with all her flags flying.  The only thing that would have made it better is if her sails were going.
One more before leaving.

And a Special Visitor

The next ship was a complete surprise.
The Empire Sandy was born in 1943 as the Empire Sandy and was built by Clelands Ltd. in Willington Quay on Tyne.  She was built as a deep sea tugboat and did salvage work as part of the Battle of the Atlantic.  She served all the way to the Bay of Bengal.
After the war, she was sold to Risdon Beasley to do rescue tug work.  At this time, she was known as the Ashford.
In 1952, she was sold to the Great Lakes Paper company and made her way to the Great Lakes.  She was named the Chris M at this time.  She was hauling timber rafts.
In the 1970s, she was going to be sold for scrap but a company called Nautical Adventures bought her.
She was converted to a three masted schooner in 1979 and she was given her original name back.
She is homeported in Thunder Bay.
While she looks like she was under sail, I think this was just for looks.  It did look cool though.
And it was nice to see a ship that at least had the appearance of being under sail.
