I saw this ship earlier this year but that was as she was making a fuel stop. Prior to that, it was a while ago.
The next ship caught be by surprise. I think she was in Sarnia unloading or stopping for fuel. Either way, I was not expecting to see her.
The Algoma Olympic was making her way up to Goderich. She's kind of a nice ship to catch because she has an interesting looking pilothouse. She was built in 1976 for the Upper Lakes Group. That was the year that Montreal was hosting the Olympics, so she was given that name in honor of that event.
When the Upper Lakes Group was bought by Algoma, her name was changed to the Algoma Olympic. I think she may be one of the few Upper Lakes ships still on the Lakes.
Anyway, it was getting pretty close to dusk and I didn't have too much longer to catch ships.
But the light was still nice.

The Algoma Olympic Stops for Fuel
Before leaving Detroit, I took a look at AIS and saw that there was one more ship heading up. I decided to head over to Riverside Park in order to catch her.
Well at least I thought that she was heading up. It turns out that she had to stop at the Sterling Fuel docks to get some fuel. I'm not sure where she was off to after that though.

The Algoma Olympic
My last ship of the day was the Algoma Olympic. I saw her on the St. Clair River but I really wasn't in the position to get a picture of her there. Since she was heading downbound, I had a chance to catch her at Belle Isle.
She is being chased by the Cuyahoga (so I guess technically the Cuyahoga would be the last ship I'd see, but I already posted those pictures).
She's actually a pretty nice looking ship for a rear-decker.
She was built in Canada.
I really like her lines.
A full on shot of her.
A shot of her bow.
I loved the way her pilothouse was looking in the golden hour.
A shot of her boom and pilothouse.
One more shot of her before turning to the Cuyahoga.

The Algoma Olympic Passes Marine City
Over the weekend, I decided to head over to the Canadian Warplane Museum, Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal. Since I got up early enough and I saw a couple of ships on AIS, I decided to take M-29 to Port Huron. The first one I saw was the Algoma Olympic.
She's been on this blog before, so I'm not going to cover her history that much. Just go over the pictures.
A closeup of her pilothouse. She almost reminds me of a couple of the 1000 footers.
A shot of her bow.
Sadly, the sun wasn't terribly cooperative for me.
For this shot, I was almost shooting directly into it but I still kind of like the shot.
Another shot of her pilothouse.
And she moves on to other places.

The Algoma Olympic
In what I thought would be a ship making her debut on Michigan Exposures I went down to the Detroit River.
Well actually, I didn't care if she was making her debut or not, I needed to take a ship picture since I spent the weekend hacking out my lungs (although I still managed a couple ship pictures). So headed down to the River to see a ship called the Algoma Olympic.
Well it turns out that the Algoma Olympic used to be called the Canadian Olympic and it was under that name that I took pictures of her before. Oh well, a ship is a ship and I don't care if I do repeats of ships on here but had I known, I probably would have taken more detail shots.
Here she is as she passes Belle Isle. She tried to stay hidden for as long as possible so that she couldn't be avoided. But too many people have read that book it seems.
I tried to do a shot where she had a place to move into.
It's kind of wierd watching the ships from new vantage points. It seems like they are twisting and turning to follow the channel.
And she is almost in a position to pass straight by.
A closeup of her pilothouse.
And her bow. Like I said, had I realized she were a repeat customer, I would have taken more of these shots.
Another shot of her pilothouse. You can actually see some folks up there and it kind of gives you a sense of scale.
This one was after I switched to the littler lens.
Because I love the straight on shot.
And then I switched back to the other lens to get some of the other shots. I think you can see the people in the pilothouse better in this shot.
I love the flags flying in this shot.
And I wis the Maple Leaf were flying in this shot.
Another shot of her bow.
And smokestacks.
And she heads off to other parts of the Great Lakes.
A shot with the Ambassador Bridge as a backdrop.
One last shot of her.
