The Gott Pases By

 It was a nice sunny day on Sunday and I was looking to see what would be cooking on the river.  I looked at Marine Traffic and I saw that the Kaye Barker was heading down and heading to the Rouge Steel plant.  Sadly, that wasn't to be.  She headed to the anchorage for some reason.

There were still a couple of other ships to catch and one of them was this one.

The Edwin H. Gott was coming down from Duluth with a load of iron ore.  And she was headed to Nanticoke.

You can see the Barker in the anchorage behind her.  I think there was some other traffic on the Rouge River and they were waiting for that to clear before sending her up.

Nanticoke is on the southern shore of Ontario.  It is roughly due north of Erie, Pennsylvania.

There is a steel mill there and some other industry and it is a common destination for ships.

From this point, it is roughly 18 hours to Nanticoke.

The sun was just about perfect for me and the geese in the foreground explains why I like taking pictures of ships on the Great Lakes.

She is about to pass under the Ambassador Bridge.

Catching Up With the Gott

Generally when I have a "Catching Up With..." post, it means that I have not seen that ship in a while.  I this case, the last time I saw the Gott was in March.

The Gott was on her way down from Duluth with a load of iron ore for Nanticoke.

She passes the Lee A. Tregurtha.  I was hoping to see the Lee A. Tregurtha as she was going up the Rouge River but that wasn't to be, the Rouge was pretty busy today, so she was waiting her turn in the Belle Isle Anchorage.

The trip from Duluth to this point is roughly two days.  It takes little over a day to cross Lake Superior from Duluth to the Soo Locks.  It is roughly a day from the Soo Locks to Detroit.

She has roughly another day of travel until she reaches her destination of Nanticoke.

Nanticoke is on the north side of Lake Erie and is pretty close to the Welland Canal.

Nanticoke has a steel mill and as a results gets a few ships there.

I think there are other cargoes that go there, but I'm not sure what.

The Gott makes the turn for the channel.

As you can see, it is pretty cloudy.  I was hoping to get pictures of the comet tonight, but as you can see, that's not happening.

Catching the Gott on the Flip Side

 My dad came down yesterday and we decided to head down to Belle Isle to do some boatwatching.  It was a fairly busy day on the river but it was also kind of nasty.

When I got to Belle Isle, it was still misting a little bit that made for a nice fog over the river.  But I'm not too upset when it is foggy because it makes for cool pictures.

The first ship that I caught also happened to be the ship that I caught on Thursday night.

The Gott was heading back from Conneaut.  I wasn't sure if she was going to stop for fuel, so I was thinking I would head back to Riverside.

She didn't stop for fuel and ended up passing Belle Isle.

She heading back up to Two Harbors.

Presumably she will pick up more iron ore there and return.

If that's the case, she will be passing again in about three days.

Finally Gott a Ship for the New Season

 The shipping season officially opened with the opening of both locks on March 22nd.  I was hoping that I would catch some ships that weekend but the weather was kind of wonky and the ships were even wonkier.  I had the day off yesterday but I had a Doctor's appointment in the morning but I saw that I could catch a ship later in they.

So my first ship of the new season is the Edwin H. Gott.

She is one of the thousand footers on the Great Lakes.

She was heading down from Two Harbors which is roughly an hour northeast of Duluth along the Lake Superior shore.

As such, I'm pretty sure that she had a load of iron ore (that weighed way more than 26,000 tons or more).

She was heading to Conneaut, Ohio with that load of iron ore.  

From Conneaut, that load will head over to Pittsburgh where it will become steel.

Here she is being visited by the M.S. Westcott.  I'm not sure why they aren't using the other one, I think they may still have her in layup.

The lighting was pretty good for this one.

I like the look of the clouds too.
