The Federal Yukon Docked

After catching the CSL Assiniboine, I headed down to Riverside to catch the ship I wanted to catch.

Before I took pictures of that ship, I took pictures of this one.
This is the FEderal Yukon.  She is loading here, I believe.
A shot of her and my subject.

The Federal Yukon Passes By

So I had one more ship to catch but I had to hurry to catch her.

The Federal Yukon was heading towards Chicago.
I'm not sure where she was heading from because I didn't catch that part.
I assume that she is going to pick up grain in Chicago.
And then I will assume that she will be heading out of the Great Lakes.
Framed by the Blue Water Bridge and the pilot boat is following her.
Port Huron is another change point.
She starts to pass by.
I like this shot.
the almost beam shot.
She passes by.
A stern shot as she heads into Lake Huron.
One more shot.

The Federal Yukon at the Nicholson Dock

So yesterday I decided to head down to Riverside Park to catch a couple of ships.  While I was there, I saw this ship at Nicholson Dock.

I'm not sure if she was loading or unloading.  I think she was loading because they will load steel coils here.
Anyway, the light was just about perfect.
And it makes for a pretty cool picture.
I pulled out a little bit to get the rest of the building.  It doesn't look like they've made much progress on tearing it down.

Following the Federal Yukon

I last saw the Federal Yukon in Burns Harbor.  She was unloading some brewing vessels.  I'm assuming that she picked up something while there.
Her destination is listed as Port Cartier.  This is almost on the Atlantic Ocean.  I'm not sure if that is an intermediate port before she leaves for deeper waters.  It is entirely possible.
At any rate, I am starting like the looks of many of these salties.
They are usually in nice color schemes.
And if I recall this one is fairly new.
the light was hitting her just about right.

and she continues on her way.

Burns Harbor in Burns Harbor

On Saturday I decided to head over to O'Hare to try my hand a planewatching there.  I found a couple of places where I might get some good views of the planes.  As I was heading over there, I saw that there was a ship in Burns Harbor and I found a spot where I think I could get pictures of her.
Nearby the spot where I decided to stop, there is a dock that is owned by Great Lakes Towing and there were a pair of tugs docked there.  First up is the tugboat Arizona.  She was built in 1931 by the Great Lakes Towing Company in Cleveland.  Her steam power was replaced with 1,230 horsepower EMD diesel engine.
The Kansas was also built in Cleveland by the Great Lakes Towing Company in 1927.  She was converted to diesel in 1958.  Her and her sister services the Burns Harbor area (including Chicago).
 Another angle of her.
And probably my favorite angle of her.  I kind of like the blue color of the water.
The Burns Harbor was servicing the AccelorMittal Plant in Burns Harbor.  Burns Harbor itself was formed in 1966 and named after Randall Burns who promoted the harbor.
The AccelorMitall steel mill in Burns Harbor is the second largest steel mill in their group.  It was built in 1964 and covers 950 acres of land.  It can produce approximately 5 million tons of steel per year.
The Burns Harbor unloading steel at it's namesake.  And I think that is kind of cool.
The best shot I could get of her pilothouse.
 Another shot of the Arizona.
It was close enough to get a hazy shot of the Chicago skyline.
Another view of the steel mill.  It is amazing just how much goes into the production of steel.
 An old tug.

Next, the Federal Yukon

The ships I was hoping to catch were in a pretty tight group.  This wasn't one of them though.
As I started, the Federal Yukon was sitting in the Port Huron anchorage.  I assume she was there waiting for a pilot.  As I was monitoring AIS, she started to move.
She is one of many salties that travel on the Great Lakes and she is one that has appeared on this blog before.  I do like the looks of some of them.
She was heading from Goderich.  I would assume that she was picking up a load of grain but it's also possible she was picking up salt.
Her destination is listed as Quebec on AIS, but I assume that she is heading further than that.
 The almost profile shot.
A shot of her pilothouse.  Most foreign vessels require a pilot who is certified to sail on the Great Lakes.  I believe there are certain points that pilots are exchanged and Port Huron is one of them.  Because there are only so many pilots to go around, you sometimes will see salties at anchor off of Port Huron.
Also, with many of the buoys removed, I don't think these vessels can sail at night but don't quote me on that.
She continues on her way.  She will sail past Detroit and through the Welland Canal.  I think it is a couple day trek for her.

Random Shots from Riverside Park

I heard rumors that Riverside Park was going to be opening this April.  Since it's April, I figured I would go check it out.
It turned out that those rumors proved to be false but since I was there and since I didn't figure I would be there long, I parked my car to get pictures of the Welland.
the Federal Yukon docked at Nicholson.  I'm not sure she what she's picking up.
The Joseph H. Thompson docked at Mistersky.  she's getting some fuel.
A duck parked at Riverside.

From what I could tell, it doesn't look like Riverside is going to be opening any time soon.  The parking lot looks like it could use a paving.  The park was still in disarray and the signs announcing that it was closed were still up.  I did see some drums, so I presume that there was some kind of cleanup activity.  So maybe...
