A Stop In Indianapolis

 Since I was so close to it, I decided to stop in Indianapolis.

It was only a brief stop but I figured it was worth it.

I ended up venturing to the downtown area because I wanted to get some pictures of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument there.

It was a monument dedicated to the soldiers and sailors that fought in the Civil War.

I think it might have also had some frontier people on it.

I didn't spend much time in Indianapolis.  I wish I had because there was another monument I wanted to get pictures of.  Maybe next time.

A Brief Stop in Indianapolis

Since it was sort of on the way home, I decided to make a brief stop in Indianapolis.  I kind of like the immediate downtown area and it has been a while since I've been there.

 I think my favorite thing there is the Soldier's and Sailor's Memorial.  Nominally, it is dedicated to the people of Indiana that fought in the Civil War, but I think they cover a few other wars too.

 I talked about this memorial a while ago but I will go over its details again.  It was built in 1888 by Bruno Schmitz out of Indiana Sandstone.  As you can see, it has some pretty neat sculptures all around it.

 There is also a ring of bronze statues around it.

 Since it's called a Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, I guess it has to have one sailor.  If I remember correctly, there is a memorial to the USS Indianapolis on the inside.

Michigan Exposures in Covered Bridge Country

A few years ago when  I first looked into covered bridges in my area, I saw that there were quite a few down in Indiana.  Since then, I've been meaning to come and visit this area but other things tended to get in the way.  Well, I decided that I wouldn't delay any further.

The main concentration is in an area called Clarke County.  It seems like the main town in this area is Rockville, IN and that is currently where I am staying.  Looking at the little pamphlet that shows their locations, there are almost forty in this area.  I'm not sure how many I will get to see tomorrow but I'm going to make a valiant effort to see a few.

This particular bridge is no longer in use.  There isn't even a foot trail that crosses it.  But I figured it made a nice picture.  Since I'm on the road, I will post more when I get home.
