Catching the John J. Boland

 These pictures are from last Sunday.  I was not feeling well the weekend before.  For that matter, I wasn't feeling well the week after.  On Saturday, I went to my cousins for a birthday party, I was feeling better enough.  Sunday looked to be a busy day, so I went out.  Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling better enough to do my posting.  So here it is.

The John Boland was in front of the Saginaw.  Interestingly enough, the Saginaw used to be known as the John J. Boland before she was acquired by her current owners.

The Boland was coming down from one of the stone ports, and I think she was heading to Detroit to deliver stone.

But I honestly don't remember.

She approaches the bridge.

It was a pretty nice day out.

The John J. Boland at Nicholson

 As I was looking at Marine Traffic last night, I saw that two ships I would be interested in catching would be passing Detroit around noon.  The weather said that it was going to be a hot one today, so I didn't really want to do much else.  I ended up heading down to Riverside.

As I was at Riverside, I looked over and saw the John J. Boland docked at Nicholson.  Before leaving, I saw a post on Facebook where she was being towed.  Apparently, she had engine issues.  Apparently, they fixed whatever engine issues because as I look at Marine Traffic, she is north of Port Huron and heading to  Calcite.  She will be picking up stone there.

It was a good day for ships and there were still a couple more.

This ship was following the Anderson fairly closely.

I think she was coming down from one of the stone ports.

She was heading down to Ashtabula.

It's the John J. Boland.

It is one of the ships that was designed for the Cuyahoga River and is part of the River Class.

I think they are pretty neat looking ships.

She makes the turn for the channel.

Catching the John J. Boland

 It wasn't too long before the next ship appeared.

The ship in question was the John J. Boland.

She was coming down from Port Dolomite which is by Detour.

She was carrying stone but I'm not sure what kind of stone.

She is also one of the River class ships.

I think these ships look pretty nice.

She passes Windsor.

She passes by.  Her home port is listed as Wilmingon, Delaware.  I think that is for tax purposes because it is not likely that she will ever go there.  Although she could.

Her destination was listed as Lorain, Ohio.

Delivering Rocks to the Locks

 The next one was coming upbound.

The John J. Boland had "Soo" listed as her destination.  I think that means she was in fact going to the Soo.

And as I look at AIS, I see that she is currently there.

Her origin was listed as Marblehead.

That means she was carrying stone.

When I saw that, I assumed she was carrying stone for the new lock but based on where she's dock, I'm not sure that is the case.

But it is possible because the other side of the river might be a good place to store the stone.

I would imagine they need quite a bit.

And then I switched to my drone.

It was little windier this time but not too bad.

She approaches.
