The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse...Again...

Last on the lighthouse portion of the tour is the Fort Gratiot lighthouse.  I've been there a couple of times in the past.  If you are interested in her story, go here.

 First time I went to it, the lighthouse was in serious need of some love.  Next time, there was scaffolding to give it that love.  Last time, it was pretty hot outside, so I wasn't in a mood to walk around.  Finally, I had a chance to get some decent shots.  I really liked the way the clouds looked.

The Port Sanilac Lighthouse

The next stop was the Port Sanilac Lighthouse.  This is another one I've visited in the past but it was pretty foggy when I visited, so I wasn't terribly happy with the pictures.  If you want to read it's story, go here.

 It is a pretty nice looking lighthouse but not really situated in a way that is photographer friendly.  But then again, there are many lighthouses that aren't.

 But I could get a shot looking up at the tower and there were just enough clouds that I liked the sky.

 I really need to figure out how to do shots like this so that the sky isn't washed out.

I think the best view was from behind but unfortunately, I wasn't happy with the other picture I took.

Harbor Beach and Lighthouse

Continuing on my tour of the thumb, we reached Harbor Beach next.

 Harbor Beach has a pretty nice little breakwater and a pretty nice fishing pier.  Looking down the pier.  Like many of the cities along this side of the Great Lakes, they will fly the Canadian flag as well.

 I kind of liked the look of the rocks underneath the water.

And the lighthouse itself.  Unfortunately, the only way to get out to it is by boat.  Here is the lighthouse's story.

Point Aux Barque Lighthouse

My lighthouse continued to the Point Aux Barque lighthouse.  This is another one I've been to in the past, so I'm not going to post the history here but just a link.

 The lighthouse itself is pretty much at the tip of the thumb and is a pretty nice looking one.

 Although it does look similar to the other lighthouses in Michigan.

 From one side of it, you can see the Saginaw Bay.  On the other, you can see Lake Huron.

 It was pretty busy when I was there, so it was difficult getting shots without people in them.

 An overall shot of the ground.  The red structure is where they stored the oil for the light.  I think the house to the left is the original keeper's house.  There is another house that would have been behind me in the this picture.

Port Austin Reef Lighthouse

So as I said in my last post, I decided to take a lighthouse tour of sorts around the thumb.  I've done this before, so this isn't really new ground although when I did it, there was quite a bit of fog so the pictures weren't as clear.

The Port Austin lighthouse has appeared on this blog in the past, so I'm not going to go into her details.  It's pretty much the same picture, I think.

On the Horizon

Yesterday, my mom and I took a lighthouse tour around the thumb.

As I am off to the Cleveland Air Show today, I wont have much of a chance to post those pictures, so I figured I would leave you with a picture of the Port Austin Lighthouse hugging the horizon.  The Port Austin lighthouse is one of the few reef lighthouses in Michigan and pretty neat looking.  So enjoy the horizon and anticipate what's coming down the pipe.
