Catching Up with the Manitoulin

 So  I went to another spot because I saw that there were a couple of upbound vessels.

The spot is the boat launch that is just south of Marine City.  It's not too bad.

The Manitoulin was heading up from Detroit.

I assume she was unloading stone for the Gordie Howe Bridge.

She was heading up to Calcite, where she would be picking up stone.

It was pretty cool to see her, since I haven't seen her in a while.

She's a pretty unique looking ship.

Especially with the boom on the front.

She starts to pass by.

The Manitoulin Leaves Windsor

 As I was waiting for the other ship, I saw this one docked in Windsor.

I think she was fueling up in this shot.  I'm not sure where she was before this but I think she was delivering something to Windsor.

As I was watching, I noticed that she was backing out of the dock.  It turns out she was turning to head to Marblehead.  I presume she will pick up stone for somewhere there.

Next Up, the Manitoulin

 It wasn't too long for the next ship to appear.

Again, I don't remember where she was coming from.

Or where she was headed to.  I probably should have wrote it down.

If I had to guess, I would say that she was heading up from Goderich.

That is her normal cargo and port.

Anyway, I like the front unloader.

It almost looks like she has a normal pilothouse.

She almost passes by.

Catching the Manitoulin

 The next ship is one of the ships I was hoping to catch but I wasn't going to waste much effort to catch her.  If I didn't catch her, I figured I would catch her another day.

As I was taking pictures of the Mississagi in Port Huron, I heard the sound of a ship behind me.

I turned around and saw the Manitoulin.

I don't remember where she was heading but I'm guessing that she was carrying stone because that is her typical cargo.

She bears a resemblance to the Algoma Innovator.  I think the boom is mounted on the front so that she can get into certain ports.

The new ship by Interlake Steamships will also be configured like this.  Many of the Boatnerd community do not like these but I don't mind.  They are something different.

And the Manitoulin

 I wasn't sure if I would be able to catch the next ship.  I knew that I wouldn't be able to use my drone because it was too dark.  I had to bump up the film speed quite a bit to catch it with my normal camera.

The Manitoulin was on her way to the Soo.  Interestingly enough, the island she is named after is near the place where the Mississagi is heading.

I'm not sure what she was picking or delivering to the Soo.  I think it may be stone but I'm not sure.

It was kind of cool to see her though.

It was getting darker too.

She passed by and I was able to switch to my smaller lens here.  That helped.

Messing With the Manitoulin

The next ship wasn't too long after the last ship.  In fact, there was a point of time where the two ships were passing each other.  At any rate.

 The Manitoulin is certainly one of the more unique looking ships on the lakes.  She had a rear mounted pilothouse with a fore mounted self unloader.  This is similar to the Algoma boat.  The new Interlake boat will have this configuration as well.

 I think this configuration helps in certain ports.

 From this angle, it kind of reminds me of a rhinoceros.

 She makes the turn for the other part of the Detroit River.

 she passes the subject of the last post.  With traffic down considerably, it doesn't seem like I've seen this as much this year.

Unfortunately, I don't remember where she was headed.

Catching the Manitoulin

It didn't take too long for the next ship to appear.

 The next ship in this case was the Manitoulin.  She is owed by the Lower Lakes Ship company.

 Her boom is to the front because that allows her to go into some ports that the ships with the other configuration can't.  It makes her look weird though.

 She was on her way to Buffalo although I don't understand why didn't wait in Detroit like the Munson did.  It's possible she can handle rough water better.  I'm not sure.

 Anyway it was nice to see.

She continues her way down the Detroit River.  I think she will reach Buffalo in 24 hours after this shot.  I think she still has to go through the Welland Canal.
