The Roger Blough Passes Whitefish Point

I thought that I might have an outside chance of catching the Roger Blough at Whitefish Point. 

 After taking some pictures of the lighthouse, I walked back to the beach.  As I scanned the horizon, I saw a familiar shape to the east.  It was a little hazy though.

 I think the ship was about two or three miles out and chugging along.

 She would have filled up in Duluth with taconite. 

 She was on her way to Gary.

 From this point, it is about 5 hours to the Soo Locks and from the Soo Locks it is about 36 hours to Gary.

Anyway, it was nice to see her.

Whitefish Point

Before I left, I saw that I might have a chance to catch the Roger Blough off Whitefish Point.  After visiting the falls, I headed over there.

 There was a ton of people there too.  It kind of made getting pictures of the lighthouse difficult.

 But I was able to get some.

 It has been a while since I have been here too.  They added a new memorial to the sailors that died on the Edmund Fitzgerald.  You can see a relief of the ship.  There are also 29 bells for each man that died that night.

A Brief Stop at Whitefish Point

On the way home, I went back via Whitefish Point and Tahquamenon Falls.  I know that it adds some time and distance to my trip but I can't be this close to either and not stop.

 There were quite a few people at the lighthouse.  I was actually a little surprised at that but it was a nice weekend and there were quite a few people everywhere else too.

 I didn't quite make out to the beach but I did get a couple of pictures from a platform nearby.  The water levels are up quite a bit.  Normally more of the beach would be exposed.

A Brief Stop at Whitefish Point

Since it was also close, I decided to stop at Whitefish Point.

 I like the lighthouse here too because it looks different.

 The water was higher than I'm used to.

 Normally, you can almost walk out to those logs.

A Quick Stop at Whitefish Point

Since I was in the neighborhood, I had to make a brief stop at Whitefish Point.

 This is the lighthouse made famous by the Edmund Fitzgerald.

She has stood as a sentinel for over 100 years.

 And I think she still stands as a sentinel.

Back to Whitefish Point

Since it looked like I had some light left, I decided to head over to Whitefish Point to get some more pictures of it as well.

 The light was perfect, I think.

 Especially as I walked around the lighthouse and got it from different angles.

 It's pretty quite during the winter.

 But it looks pretty cool.

 So I just got different angles.

 Tried to get everything, but there were some places where the snow was too thick.

 As you can see the snow is pretty high.  But some of that is because of the plowing.

A Brief Stop at Whitefish Point

My next stop was Whitefish Point.  I can't pass up the opportunity to take a lighthouse picture.

 And Whitefish Point is one of my favorites.  The light was just about right, although there were a few snow flurries.  I wasn't going to do much wandering around as it was pretty cold and windy.

 That still didn't preclude me from getting a few shots.

Still Dodging Rain at Whitefish Point

I was going to pass on going up to Whitefish Point, but since I was already close enough, I figured what the heck.  The rain wasn't quite as bad but it was still pouring a bit.

 Somehow, lighthouse pictures look better with some weather behind them.

All in all, it was a pretty nice trip.  I'm glad that another milestone of this blog has been reached.  The next one will be the five year anniversary I think.
