The Latest Bit of Insanity

I don't normally talk about politics on this blog but lately I've been given too much fodder.  President Trump wants to increase the defense budget by $54 billion which just happens to be roughly 10%.  He also wants to build a wall along the Mexican border.  The lowest estimate I've see for that was $20 billion.  And I'm pretty sure that is only the cost to build the wall.  It probably doesn't include the cost to man or maintain it.  If I remember correctly, I did a cocktail napkin thought exercise on that cost at one time.

Since they don't want to raise taxes .  In fact, I've heard that they want to lower taxes.  That money is going to have to come from somewhere.  Several places have been targeted for that money.  They want to cut funding for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment of the Arts and probably many other places.  I would love to talk about those things but I only have one blog and I'm only one person.
Anyway, one place that I did hear was the Coast Guard.  And that was to the tune of $1.5 billion.  Which interestingly enough is roughly 10% of it's budget.  I seriously hope this is coming from a place of ignorance because I can't imagine consciously cutting the Coast Guard budget.  Especially by that much.
The Coast Guard wears many hats within the Government.  It's main mission is to perform search and rescue missions.  It is also used to maintain the aids to navigation on the nation's waterways.  During the winter, it is tasked to keep the major waterways free of ice.  Well at least free enough.  The Coast Guard is also used for harbor defense.  It is used in drug interdiction.  And it probably is also used for border security.  At least for people that try to come here by water.
Like the other groups in the Department of Homeland Security, it has been asked to do quite abit since 9/11.  And given the President's propensity to stay at Mar-A-Lago rather than the White House, it has had to task resources to protect him there.  And this is the thanks they get?
Anyone who has read this blog for a while knows that I am a fan of the Coast Guard.  They do alot to protect this country.  And I don't understand why someone would want to cut their budget given his objectives in other areas.
Meanwhile, he wants to increase the Defense budget by 10%.  As you also know, I'm a fan of our military but I also think that if there was one group in Washington that could use some belt tightening it's them.  I mean you look at the list of recent defense projects and I can't think of one that hasn't gone past schedule or ran over budget.  Where is the accountibility for that?  I mean, we have our President saying that our military is depleted.  Has anyone asked why, given that we spend more than the next 6 or 7 countries combined.  If we can't protect ourselves with that kind of money, something is majorly wrong.
So what does a $1.5 billion cut mean?  Well, from what I understand, the Coast Guard is going to lose the next National Security Cutter.  I'm going to guess that it also means they are not going to get a new icebreaker.  Never mind that the world's largest maritime nation only has 1 large icebreaker and one medium icebreaker for the Arctic.  Given that more nations are challenging the Arctic, we need more of a presence up there.
It probably means that the Coast Guard will be asked to do the same with even less.   I suspect that this cut wont see the light of day but it never should have even been proposed in the first place.

A Windy Night

So it was a pretty windy day and the lights were flickering.  Every time a strong gust would pass over the building, it sounded like a jet flying over.  So  I found myself checking flightaware quite a bit.  On one of the times I checked, I saw that planes were using the 27s to land.  I don't think I've ever seen planes coming into the 27s and I thought about heading to the airport.  Well, I decided against it since the lights were probably out and that makes driving pretty nasty.
So I got some shots at home.  First up, the moon.
Because the planes were using the 27s, that gave me sort of opportunity to planewatch from my home.  I think this is Fed Ex flight 505 that usually comes in around 6.
This was an MD-80 series plane but I'm not sure what airline.

Game One of the MAC Tournament

I almost thought that Friday night was going to be my last basketball game of the season.  I wasn't planning on going down to Cleveland to catch a game and it was looking like Eastern would have to travel somewhere for the opening game.  Well it turned out that they got the 8th seed by virtue of both Northern Illinois and Bowling Green losing.  I'm not sure how all of the tiebreakers work out, but Eastern came out on top.

As always, these are pictures from the game but not actually of the game.  If you want to see pictures of the game, go to Hustle Belt.
I like to get pictures from the warmups.  This is Nick Madray warming up.
The cheerleaders getting the folks that managed to show up for the game pumped up.
 the EMU basketball band.
Coach Mark Montgomery of Northern Illinois.
 Coach Murphy for Eastern Michigan.
The cheerleaders in a pyramid.
I think he was arguing a call here.
He was definitely arguing a call here.
Coach Murphy talking to his players.
I kind of like this shot of the cheerleaders.
I'm not sure what three refs together could talk about but I imagine it can't be good.
EMU Assistant Coach Benny white arguing with a ref.  I don't normally get pictures of him, so I figured that I would post one here.
 Swoop.
James Thompson trying for a basket.
At least the student section turned out.
Blake Brown getting high fives after a particularly good showing.
The Eagles celebrating a pretty hard fought win.

They'll get to face the #1 Seed of Akron in Cleveland tomorrow.  I wish them the best.

Catching the Spirit of Freedom

After catching the eagles, I had some amount of afternoon left, so I decided to head over to Metro Airport to try to catch the heavies.
First up was an Airbus A330 coming in from Amsterdam.
I'm not sure where this 757 was coming in from, but it has the Spirit of Freedom on the nose.
 Another angle of that plane.
And what's better than catching one 757?
 Catching two of them.
 A CRJ coming in.
This 777 was arriving from Shanghai.
 A United Embrear 175.
This CRJ belonged to American Airlines.
 A 737 belonging to Southwest.

I didn't realize that I got the moon in this shot.
And I ended the day with the Lufthansa A330.

Return to the Eagles

I decided to return down to the Magee Wildlife Marsh Area.  I ended up getting up early enough in order to catch the eagles being active.
Prior to reaching the places where the eagles were, I had to pass the swans.  The light was hitting them just right, so I decided to get some pictures.
 it was pretty cool.
I caught one of the swans in flight.

It wasn't long before I saw some eagles.  This was an immature one.
And I went to one of the nests where I saw an eagle land fairly close to me and pick up some grass.
He took it back to the nest.
It was pretty cool being this close to an eagle.
It made for a pretty cool picture.

The eagle bringing the grass back to the nest.
Then he brought a large stick to the nest.

Then I went to another nest where there was another eagle flying.
and one more shot of it.
