The Soon to be Algoma Compass at Rest

I found out this week that the Adam E. Cornelius was going to be renamed the Algoma Compass when she is taken over by her new owners.  I actually think that is a pretty cool name.

 Supposedly she isn't going to be in Huron much longer.  Somebody said she is going to Erie, PA where she will get some work.  And judging by her paint, it looks like she needs it.

 I think she is going to replace either the Algorail or Algoway.  That's kind of a shame as I like both of those ships.

 But the Cornelius doesn't look that bad.

 The lighting was almost perfect for me.  It was a beautiful day yesterday.

Ships at Rest Again...

After Marblehead, I decided to head over to Huron, Ohio to catch the ships in layup there.  Again, I think the weather makes for some nice ship pictures.

 The Adam Cornelius is still in layup and it sounds like she isn't coming out this year either.

 The Sam Laud is still in layup and from what I've heard she's not likely to come out this year either. Although things could change and she might be out later this year.  It would be kind of nice to see her out and about.

 Then I decided to shoot a couple pictures through the rain covered window.  For this one I focused on the ship.  I kind of like it.

But I think I like this one more.

Ships at Rest in Huron, Ohio

Since it wasn't too far away, I decided to head over to Huron, Ohio.  It has been close to a month since I've seen any ships and I knew I would catch at least one there.

 I wasn't expecting to see the Sam Laud there but she was there.  She was in a position where I could get decent pictures of her.

 I was expecting to see the Adam E. Cornelius there though.  She has been laid up here for a couple of years now.

 I suspect that she is probably going to be laid up again this year as well. 

 Apparently the Sam Laud may be laid up here for a while too.  With a number of coal power plants closing, the demand may not be there.

The Adam E. Cornelius Still in Layup

Since I was in Huron, I figured I might as well get some pictures of the Cornelius.

 The Adam E. Cornelius has been laid up for over two years now.  I guess she is too big for river deliveries but too small for other deliveries.

 Plus the shipping industry is still in a soft spot right now.  I guess it's getting better but not well enough.

 So she waits.

Hopefully I will see her out and about again.  With the way things work, you never know.

Stopping in Huron, Ohio.

Since it was on the way, I decided to make a brief stop in Huron, Ohio.  The two ships that I saw there in layup are still there.

 First up was the Thomas R. Morrish, she was performing dredging operations in the river.

 The John J. Boland is still laid up here but she may be leaving soon.  I saw a sheet that said she would be leaving sometime in early April.  That would be a good thing, I think.

The Adam E. Cornelius is going to remain laid up for a little longer though.  I'm not sure when she will be coming out again if at all.

After taking pictures of the boats, I ended up stopping at this little restaurant on US-6.  It was pretty good, I would consider it again if I come this way.

Ships Resting In Huron, Ohio

Next I stopped in Huron, Ohio to take some pictures of the ships that are currently laid up there.

 The ore market is a little soft at the moment.  With the Chinese dumping steel on the market and the demand from China softening up, steel prices are down right now.  That means that ore prices are down.  But I think one of the other issues for the Boland is that she is too large for the Cuyahoga River and not large enough for other things.  However, I'm sure that once the market picks up, she will be out and about again.

 I will say she is a pretty nice looking ship.

 The Adam Cornelius suffers from the same issue as the Boland but it seems like she's been in layup more than she's been out and about.

Passing Through Ohio

On Saturday I decided to head over to Washington DC.  I saw that the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and I've been meaning to head over there for that.  So that meant going through Ohio.

 I decided to take the more scenic route through Ohio.  It meant a longer trip out here but I pretty much figured that I wouldn't be in DC until later anyway.  I wanted to give myself plenty of time though, so that gave me an opportunity to get some sunrise shots of the Schoonmaker.

 There are a few people that don't like this scheme.  I think it's fine and it looks nice in the light of the sunrise. 

 As I was taking a shot of the Schoonmaker, a helicopter decided to fly overhead.  I don't think I had quite enough light though.

 Toledo looked pretty good in the sunrise too.

 It's no Mackinac Bridge, but it will do.

 The scenic route involved me taking Ohio Route 2.  This of course meant a stop at Marblehead and I think this is the best light I've caught it in.

 As I was heading into town, I saw that the Manitowoc was unloading  Of course had to find a place for a picture.

Another Visit to Huron, Ohio

So I decided to make another stop in Huron, Ohio.

 Again, what a difference a week makes.  You can almost see all of the water.  It was kind of nice because it was calm enough to see the ship's reflections.

 I have a feeling these guys are going to be here for a while.  I'm not seeing them on the fit out lists for American Steamship.  That is kind of a shame.
