The Algoma Buffalo Passes Through Bay City Today

I had some decisions for where to go today.  The lovely Kaye E. Barker was heading to Grand Haven today.  There were also some ships heading to Muskegon.  But then I checked the Saginaw River and it looked like a busy day.  There were at least three ships that were on it and I was really interested in catching one of those.

First up, the Algoma Buffalo was heading over from the Calumet River.  I think she had a load of salt but I'm not sure.

She was heading to Saginaw.

But before she got to Saginaw, she had to pass Bay City and that's where I caught her.

But I like this one better as it is almost a beam shot.

It was also a spot where I could get a bow shot.

I moved to another spot in the river because I wanted to catch the next ship.

I liked the way the light looked in this shot.  Unfortunately, if I exposed the ship properly, the sky would be washed out.  This shot is kind of a compromise.

The Algoma Buffalo Leaves Manistee

 The place I was going to ended up being Manistee.  I saw that there was a ship that was headed there in the morning and I figured I get there at about the time she was leaving.  Actually, my mom convinced me not to go to Sleeping Bear because it would be crowded.  It took a little arm twisted on her part because I kind of wanted to go there, but I don't like crowds, so Manistee won out.

So the ship in question was the Algoma Buffalo.

She is one of the four ships that Algoma Central bought from American Steamship when I was in the hospital.  She used to be known as the Buffalo and now she is known as the Algoma Buffalo.

She and the now Algoma Compass were the two ships that Algoma wanted and they ended up scrapped one of the other two.  The last of the four is currently in long term layup in Toledo.

I'm not actually sure what she was delivering though.  I'm going to guess that it was salt because I think Algoma has been using this ship to do salt runs.

Her hull seems to have evidence of that.

But I will have to admit, that this was one of the neatest places that I've photographed a ship.  I didn't realize she would be so close to me.  But apparently, this was a channel to connect Manistee Lake to Lake Michigan.

I went to a spot by the channel entrance.  I kind of wish I could have scoped it out a little better but I'll know next time I got there.

It was a pretty cool spot though.

I was able to catch the ship as she turned into the channel.

I kind of wish I had brought my drone though.

And this wasn't too bad of a view.

The Algoma Buffalo Unloading in Windsor

 As I was waiting for the next ship, I looked across the river.

I saw that the Algoma Buffalo was unloading in Windsor.

The Algoma Buffalo used to be known as the Buffalo and was acquired from American Steamship by Algoma Central in 2017.

It seemed like it was a short term purchase at the time but it looked like they repainted her to proper Algoma colors.  I think she can go places that many of the other Algoma boats can't.

 This is the next ship that I caught.

The Algoma Buffalo was coming down from Goderich.  I think she was heading down to one of the Ohio ports.

Algoma did a nice job of repainting her and they seem to be getting alot of use out of her.

I haven't seen too much of the other ship they bought with her.  But I've see it on AIS, so I know that they are using her.

She is a pretty nice looking ship.
