El Toro was founded in 1942. It was the major marine Air Base on the west coast until it was closed in 1999. Twice it was used for Nixon's final trips in Air Force One. Once as his final trip after his resignation and then once as his final trip before they buried him at his library which isn't too far away from the airfield. It was originally farm land used by the guy who owned the land that is now the City of Irvine.
It is no longer an airfield and is now being used as a shopping center and other uses.
The base originally was going to be a blimp field hence the huge hangars.
