The Tufty at the Belle Isle Anchorage

I went down to Detroit today to catch a couple of ships.  There was one I really wanted to catch but circumstances prevented that.

First I went to Riverside Park but it was closed, so I went to Belle Isle.  As I was heading to Belle Isle, I saw one of the ships that I thought I was going to catch pass.  But that was okay, it was a Fednav ship and I have plenty of pictures of one of those.
This ship was slowing down as I got to Belle Isle, so I figured she might be heading to the anchorage.  It turns out that she was.
On one side, she was getting fueled.
On the other, she was getting pilot change from the M.S. Westcott.  I think she moved after I was down there because I think she's docked at Nicholson now.

Anyway, the Tufty was built in 2009 in China.  She is owned by Navarone and is registered in Cyprus.

My First Saltie of the Season

The next ship wasn't too far behind.

It was one of many salties that ply the Great Lakes.
The ship in question was the Wigeon.
She is owned by the Navarone company out of Greece.
I think she might be being leased to another company.
She is heading up to Thunder Bay.
Presumably, she will pick up wheat.
She is a nice looking ship.
Although, she looks like she could use a little paint.
One more as she goes on her way.

The Labrador Passes By

The next ship was following fairly close behind the Happy River.

I'm not sure if I posted her before since her tag didn't come up, so I will go over her history.
She is owned by the Navarone SA Marine Enteprises out of Limassol, Cyprus.  She is currently under charter to Canadian Forest Navigation, hence her colors.
Like her fleetmates, she is named after a type of duck.
She was built in 2010 and can carry almost 31,000 tons of cargo.
She is 606 feet long and has a beam of 77 feet.
Since I see her in Know Your Ships, she has been on the Lakes before.
I've just never caught her before.

And Then There Was the Chestnut

Next up is a ship that hasn't appeared on this blog before.

I'm pretty sure her sisters have though.
The Chestnut was built in 2009 but I'm not sure where.  Based on her looks, I would guess China.
She can carry 30,807 tons of cargo.
She is 606 feet long and 77 feet wide which allows her to go through the Welland Canal.
She is owned by Navarone SA Marine but run by Canadian Forest Navigation.
Her company is headquartered in Cypress and she is registered in Cypress.
She makes the turn to leave the river.
And then I switched to my drone.  My drone wasn't giving me any guff here, so it was cool.
Now I can see why they call it the Blue Water Bridge.
I'm not sure why the hatches are open.
Maybe they are airing out the holds.
One more shot before moving on to something else.

A New Visitor to Michigan Exposures

Little did I realize, I would end up getting a new ship on my blog.

The Andean is a new visitor to this blog but I'm pretty sure she is not a new visitor to the Lakes.
The Andean was built in 2009 for her current owners.
Her flag of convenience is from Cyprus.
And she currently sails under charter for Canada Forest Navigation.
She is 606 feet long and 77 feet wide and that means she can fit through the Welland Canal.
Well I guess she would have to fit through the Welland to get here.
I think she was heading up to Sault Ste Marie, but I'm not sure.
You can see the next ship in the background.
I like this angle and I like this spot because I can get a fairly close shot of this angle.
One more shot.
And then I took to the air.  I love the blue of the water from the sky.  It almost looks like a pool.
I was able to maneuver well enough to get this angle.
I kind of like the wake from these boats.
The beam shot.
And she moves on.
One more shot before the next ship.

Barnacle Bill the Sailor

I had an audit today and it got done early, so I left work early.  I saw that the Arthur M. Anderson was unloading in Detroit.  I also saw that this guy was heading downbound.  I wasn't sure I would make it in time to catch but I did.

The Barnacle was built in 2009 for the Navarone SA Marine Company out of Limassol, Cyprus.  She sails under charter for Canadian Forest Navigation of Montreal.
She can carry 30,800 tons of cargo.
Her length is 606 feet and she is 77 feet wide and that means she can fit through the Welland Canal.
While I haven't seen her before, I know she is not new the Lakes.
She is currently heading to Foynes in Ireland.  I presume she is carrying grain.
So then I switched over the drone.  It was a little on the windy side, so I didn't take it up too high.  Besides, I think I am liking the lower angles more.  Except I can't see some of the details on the deck.
I do like seeing the wake and stuff though.
She gets closer.
I'm thinking this might be my favorite angle from the air.
The beam shot.
She gets approached by the pilot boat.
I'm not usually a fan of stern shots but I like this one.
And as for the title of this article, it's an old dirty song about Barnacle Bill the sailor.  It had raunchy lines that rhymed.  Anyway, the name of this ship made me thing of that song.  I wont post the lyrics though because I know people bring their kids here.
