A Wolverine by Any Other Name

 Next up is my last boat of the day.

She was also fairly close.  In fact, if the Mariner hadn't taken a wide berth, I could have gotten a passing shot.

I'm not sure where the Pierson was heading from but her AIS said she was heading to Thessalon.  That is to the north of Detour.

I'm not sure if she is taking something there or picking up something.

Judging by her anchor pockets, I would say she is loaded which means she is delivering something.

Thessalon is fairly close to Sudbury.  And Subury has a nickel mine.

I'm not sure if nickel is delivered by ship though.

Anyway, the Pierson used to be known as the Wolverine when she was owned by her previous company.

I wish that named would have stayed because it's a cool name.

Then I switched to my drone.

I didn't get close this time.

It was a pretty cool day.  I got to catch the Anderson on a day that will remain in her history.  I got to see a bunch of ships and I was able to hook up with a fellow boatnerd.  All made for a good day.

A Wolverine by Any Other Name

 I had one more ship to catch.

The Robert S. Pierson was coming down from Calcite I think.

She was heading over to Cleveland with a load of stone.

She is looking a bit on the rusty side.

She wasn't too far behind the Nantucket and I like the looks of these ships, so I decided to catch her.

The reason for the name of this post is that she used to be known as the Wolverine when she was owned by Oglebay Norton.

She was bought after Oglebay Norton declared bankruptcy and sold all of their ships.

She is being passed by a cormorant.

It was pretty windy and that made for some wave action.

She is approached by the Westcott.

Needing a Tetanus Shot Now

It wasn't too long for the next ship.

The Robert S. Pierson was heading up to the steel mill at the Soo.

I don't think she was carrying anything there as she seems to be riding pretty high.

I'm not sure where she was coming from.

She makes the turn for the channel.

As she started to make this turn, she was starting to look pretty rough.

That is kind of sad, because people said she just came out of drydock.  Normally that would entail a repainting.

But I don't think they repainted her this time.  I'm not sure if this is rust or her old colors.

Either way, she doesn't look good.

But then again, paint doesn't pay the bills but it makes me wonder if she is not long for this world.

 The Robert S. Pierson was across from the Kaministiqua.

Again, it wasn't too obscured by the trees, so I grabbed a picture.

A Wolverine by any Other Name

 So on Sunday, I didn't see much river traffic and I was about to do something else and then I saw that the Robert S. Pierson was heading upbound.  The weather wasn't the greatest but it was fairly warm so I didn't have to worry about the roads as much.

The Robert S. Pierson has just delivered stone to Detroit and she was heading back up to one of the stone ports.  I think she was heading to Calcite but I don't really remember.

If she was heading to Calcite, she would be picking up more stone for somewhere else.

There have been quite a few ships unloading stone at the foot of the Gordie Howe Bridge, so she might be coming back for that.

At any rate, she is kind of a favorite of mine because she used to be known as the Wolverine.

She's also one of the River class ships that looks like a warship.

I think she looks pretty sleek.

She continues up the river.

I headed up to Marysville next.

I figured that since I was just going to catch one ship, I might as well catch her at different spots.

The weather improved a little bit but I can't launch the drone here because it is considered as a control zone.

It was brightening up at least.

She continues up the river.

And then I headed up to Port Huron because I wanted to get shots with my drone and I could use it there.

The sun was starting to come out and sadly there wasn't anything coming down.

And I was able to get my drone up but I had to straighten the shots because I forgot to adjust the gimbal.

The pictures looked pretty nice even if the ship didn't.

She passes the drone.

She needs a little paint work but I don't think she goes in for her five year inspection for another two years.  I think the shipping companies like to wait until the ships are in for their five year inspection because they are already dry docked.

But it shows character.

I love the wake.

She passes by.

And she heads into Lake Huron.

I switched to my other camera to catch her as she was leaving.  The light was just right and would have been perfect for a downbound ship, if one existed.
