A Memorial

This is a memorial dedicated to the soldiers and sailors of Wayne County who fought in the Spanish American War. It also covers a couple of other battles during that time period.

This is a statue of a sailor of that time period. The main reason we had to go to war was the blowing up the Battleship Maine (although there has been some debate about who really blew it up). As a result of the war, we got posession of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillippines and a couple other places (Guam?).

This is a close up of the face of the sailor.

On the other side of the statue is a soldier of that time period. The Spanish American war is famous for Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders charging up San Juan Hill.

A close up of the soldier's face.

The full statue from the back.

The full statue from the front.

Another angle of the sailor. The Navy played a major part in this war as a fleet of American Ships defeated a fleet of Spanish Ships near the Phillippines.

A closeup of the sailor's face.

A closeup of the soldier's face.

It's not as impressive as some of the other monuments but I do like the details on the faces of the sailor and soldier.
