Today is Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday or as they call it around here Paczki (pronounced poonchkie) Day. This is the last day before Lent and is usually full of large celebrations.
The paczki is a Polish tradition where they would use the sugar and what not before they would fast. The proper way to make this is in lard with plum jelly and powdered sugar. The modern version has the lard giving away to less deadly oils and the plum jelly has given away to other fillings. Both of these combined have basically made them glorified jelly donuts. The reason for the lard would be so they would remind you all day. Apparently the best can be found in Hammtramck which is a suburb of Detroit.
Somebody brought them into work, it wasn't bad but not quite the way I remember.
