This is by far one of my favorite sculptures in Detroit and I have posted it on this blog several times, so I'm not going to say much here.
The sculpture was dedicated to the Soldiers and Sailors of the Union Army. Around the sculpture are depictions of different types of soldiers and sailors that served in the Civil War. There are also busts of important (read Northern) figures from the war.
The figure at the top is Michigania or Victory. In one hand she brandishes her sword and the other raises her shield readying for attack.
The four female figures above the soldiers and sailors represent Victory, History, Emancipation, and Union.
